In Brief: Last Friday (June 23rd) was Employee Ownership Day in the UK! Revelers marked the celebration’s eleventh year by raising awareness of the success and growth of employee ownership across the country.Â
The Celebrations: The Employee Ownership Association encouraged members to post with the hashtag #TheEOeffect to share their experiences with employee ownership, and in their 100 day countdown to mark the occasion called upon various speakers and leaders in the world of employee ownership to highlight the movement. Other groups published new research highlighting the benefits of employee ownership, and some companies even announced transitions to the model.
Why It Matters: The largest barrier to greater employee ownership is a lack of information and understanding about what exactly employee ownership is. Holidays such as this (as well as websites such as EO+WD) work to increase awareness not only on the benefits of employee ownership, but the viability of the policy as an alternative to more traditional forms of ownership. By posting online and hosting events highlighting the experience of workers at employee-owned companies, the holiday offers a chance to raise the profile of employee ownership throughout the nation and the world.
